t’s changed in the business world in the past few decades, it’s that it has gotten somewhat more treacherous, and if you happen to be running a small startup or something along those lines, then you know full well just how bad it can get. From people trying to break into your offices, break into your shop, or maybe even steal your data from your company servers, you just can’t put anything past people nowadays.
Of course, that is not always the case, and if it was as common as picking up a coffee from Starbucks, then we would be living in a state of perpetual panic. So far, that state is only achievable in special cases where people are going through some tough times, and have not exactly become the norm just yet, so rest easy for now.
The point is, that you’re better safe than sorry and as cliche as that sounds, you should always prepare for the worst, especially if you happen to be running a business that you are trying to get off the ground. So, let’s briefly talk about how you could secure your business both in the physical, and the digital world.

Hold down the fort
While your shop or office shouldn’t have to be your castle, it being somewhat safe certainly wouldn’t hurt. Other than the basic security precautions like installing a lock on the door and some basic CCTV, there are a few things you could consider.
- Install mirrors on some corners where there is no CCTV to patch out blind spots. This might sound rather obvious, but it can prove to be much more effective than you give it credit for.
- Install a bell that hangs over your door, the classic kind which alerts you whenever someone enters the store. If you’re feeling fancy you can install an electric one that can even send off alerts to a device of your choice, but that seems a bit needless most of the time.

Keep your tech safe
Companies being hacked is nothing new and if anything, they are more at risk than ever nowadays. With companies as big as Microsoft and Apple getting hacked, you should’ve seen the things some hackers are capable of. That said, you shouldn’t just leave the door open for them.
- Get specialists to check up on your PCs and other pieces of tech such as servers on a regular basis. If you do not have someone from inside the company to do this then hire someone to do the job. For example, Firewall Technical managed services Ottawa or someone local to you.
- Make sure to keep your passwords safe. Don’t use easy to guess passwords for obvious reasons, but most importantly do not share passwords between different accounts. If someone happens to find out one of them, they essentially found out several of them just because of that. Usernames are usually public and not hard to guess so don’t fool yourself into thinking your other accounts are safe with the same passwords.
- If you have a hard time remembering different passwords, then use a tool for it like KeePass, which by the way, is absolutely free.
